It seems as I enter the CCSS training I am looking for ways to protect the students caught in the middle of this transition.

When pressed into action, math skill should be creatively / selectively used to solve problems.  Identifying an underlying pattern to the numbers or cullling information for the material needed to start the process is part of Creativity.
